I’ve just finished another memorable weeks ski touring in Val Maira in the southern Italian Alps – this is an almost unique valley in the Alps, having no ski infrastructure but miles and miles of excellent ski terrain. As a result, it’s a very quiet and unspoilt valley – with excellent day touring and always a great café or cozy place to get a beer, or a bite to eat at the end of each days touring. The wildlife was good too – this week we saw deer, the usual plentiful animal tracks and birdlife, plus and a couple of rare Lammergeir vultures at close range (ie they came down to check us out!)
Great to meet up with Tomas this week too, guiding group from Slovenia. He’s a super friendly guy and a great guide, who often works with British skiers and climbers too, so we were able to swap notes about conditions around the valley during our stay.
Finally, the best part of the week was all the powder – as it put down 70cm of fresh snow during the week. This made for some challenging driving conditions, but as there’s safe, all weather touring just 10 minutes from the hotel, it was no big deal – just a bit of careful planning to make the best use of clear weather days for visiting summits above the tree line and skiing widely spaced gladed larch forests when it snowed.
Thanks to everyone for being such a good team this year and thanks to Alessandro and team at the Hotel Londra for cooking excellent 5 course meals each night, with plenty of local specialities and a great wine list!
