| Summary |
This is a strenuous touring area, offering numerous good ski mountaineering summits including the highest mountain in Austria and correspondingly big ski descents. |
The route is a classic horseshoe around the head of the Tauern valley. Big climbs are required to traverse between the huts each day, but these are of the usual high Austrian standard - with bar, restaurant facilities and showers being the norm. The tour can be completed in most conditions, but stable snow and weather are needed for the highest summits and steeper sections of the route. |

| Starting Point |
We start and finish the week in Innsbruck, which is easily reached by direct flights from several airports in the Uk. |
| |
| Sample Itinerary |
| Subject to weather and snow conditions, the plan for the week is as follows:- |
 |
| Day 0 - Sat |
PM, meet in Innsbruck - discuss plans, sort food and kit, overnight in valley. |
| Day 1 - Sun |
AM Travel to Hohe Tauern and skin up to the Essener Rostocker Hut. PM If time allows, we will make a day tour above the hut to climb Rostocker Eck (2749m). 800m ascent to hut, 4-500m ascent & descent on the day tour ~5-6hr.
|
| Day 2 - Mon |
Ascent of the Grosser Geiger (3360m) before skiing a great west then east facing descent via the Turmljoch to the Johannis Hut - this is one of the oldest huts in the Eastern Alps, opened in 1857. 1150m ascent, 1250m descent ~6-7hrs. |
| Day 3 - Tue |
A long climb up the 4th highest summit in Austria, the magnificent Gossvenediger (3674m) in order to make the huge 2000m descent down to Innergschloss and the Matreier Tauernhaus, where we spend the night. 1500m ascent, 2150m descent ~8hrs. |
| Day 4 - Wed |
A really big day - starting with a 1300m climb, followed by an intricate traverse down, across and up to the Granatscharte Col (2974m). This leads to the final north east facing descent down to the Rudolfs Hut. (If you are feeling really keen, we can also take in Sonnblick (3088m) too, just above the Granatscharte!) 1800m ascent, 1000m descent ~7-8hrs. |
| Day 5 - Thur |
AM Morning climb up Granatspitze (3086m) in order to enjoy a big 1500m descent down to the road near Grossdorf. Short Bus/Taxi ride round to Lucknerhaus. PM A long but steady 900m climb leads up to the Studl Hut. 1650m ascent, 1600m descent ~8hrs - via the route described. This can be reduced to 1200m with variations, or by staying at the lower Luckner Hut. |
| Day 6 - Fri |
On the final day we climb Grossglockner (3798m) - the highest mountain in Austria. The last section involves climbing on foot and requires good snow conditions. Descent from the ski depot is via the same route of ascent, with a great 1900m ski down to Lucknerhaus. PM Collect car and return to Innsbruck. 1000m ascent, 1900m descent ~6-7hrs.
