Struggling with difficult snow, or do you always dream of carving neater turns?  Then our off piste coaching week could be just the thing you need. Aimed at improving off piste skiers and ski mountaineers - this fun and informative week combines structured coaching from a top BASI instructor, with off piste guiding to give you time to bed in your new found skills.

"Thanks again for a great week, excellent fun and we learnt loads too.  We had a fantastic powder day on Sunday after the others had gone  home, once again the GM was pretty deserted." RB, Off Piste Coaching Week - Jan '08

Course Base We base ourselves in the French Alpine resort of Chamonix, a place famous worldwide for it's great off piste skiing. We spend the week in and around the Chamonix Valley, traveling to other areas on day trips if appropriate.  Chamonix is easily reached by a flight to Geneva and an airport transfer, both of which are bookable online.

Sample Itinerary  Subject to weather and snow conditions, we follow the general format below:

Instruction covers all aspects from modern carving technique to dealing with different types of snow and terrain.

The guiding gives you a chance to put it all into practice and enjoy some big descents and ski tours.

On these sessions, as well as tips and feedback we cover avalanche awareness, glacier travel and other essential aspects of off piste safety.

Fri PM - course debrief + advice for the future.

Food and Accommodation Food and accommodation must be paid for seperately. Our recommended hotel in Chamonix is the Hotel Les Lanchers ** (see photos) in Chamonix Les Praz, run by friendly ex-pat Jon Rodgers - who we will happily put you in touch with if you'd like to reserve a room. You are however free to make other accommodation arrangements if you choose (Chamonix has numerous hotels and rental appartments available at a wide variety of prices - click on 'reservation' at the Chamonix website for more details).

Fitness  Off piste skiing requires good levels of fitness and stamina (see fitness level 2) - so we advise you to prepare well in advance with regular training and ideally some skiing.   Some days we will be using ski mountaineering kit to access cols and off piste runs during the week, so you also need good cardiovascular fitness.

Skiing Ability  We split into 2 teams, so the week is suitable for skiers with a range of off piste experience (see: ski ability levels 1-3) ie from intro level off piste, through to confirmed off piste skiers wanting to perfect their technique.   Remember, the fitter you are when you arrive the more you will enjoy it!

Equipment We will supply you with a full kit list. You are responsible for bringing personal clothing, a rucsac and ski mountaineering skis, boots and kit (local hire is available).  We are delighted to be working on this course with Back Country UK, who provide excellent service and advice as a leading retailer of  ski mountaineering equipment in the UK.
