Rock FAQs

1. When is the best time to go?

Rock Climbing is practiced in the UK year round, with mid march through to the end of October generally offering the best weather. Our scheduled UK rock climbing courses run during May - June and Sept - Oct (during Jul - Aug our guides are working out in the Alps). Sunrock destinations abroad are best avoided in high summer, when it's often too hot to climb - Autumn and winter are the best times to plan a visit.

2. How much experience do I need?

You can join our scrambling or intro rock climbing courses with no previous experience - but for our more advanced itineraries, previous climbing experience is required. For more information take a look at our rock course suitability section and the individual course descriptions.

3. How old do I need to be to join one of yours courses?

The minimum age for all of our courses is 18 unless you are accompanied in loco parentis by someone over the age of 18 during the whole course. For legal and insurance reasons, we are unable to allow any exceptions to this rule.

4. I'm on my own - can I book a single place on one of your courses?

You can book single places on all of our 'single place courses', but all other itineraries are booked on a private guiding basis. See our rock dates + prices page for details.

5. What Equipment do I need?

To download a full uk rock climbing kit list - click here. You are responsible for bringing all items on the kit list. All ropes and lead climbing protection are supplied by ourselves (though you are welcome to bring your own rack along if you want on any instructional courses). For the more specialist items including harness and helmet, hire is available if needed.

6. Do I need to bring a car?

For all scheduled courses your guide/instructor will have a vehicle available for transport during the course. For private guiding you can use the guides' car if you prefer, but you are expected to cover the fuel costs.

7. What qualifications and experience do your guides have?

On climbing courses, all our guides and instructors hold either the MIA, MIC or IFMGA guides qualification. Our team are all keen and active rock climbers, whose total enthusiasm for the sport is one of our greatest assets.
