Scottish Winter Kit List - download PDF version here

The extremes of winter conditions in Scotland should not be under estimated. Shell garments in particular need to be of high quality, as do boots, gloves and other warm clothing

Waterproof Jacket - full weight breathable model preferred - eg Rab Latok or Suilivan Jackets

Overtrousers - with 3/4 or full length side zips - eg Rab Latok Salopettes or Latok Alpine Pants

Rucsac 40-50l capacity - a plastic liner is a must.

Winter Mountaineering Boots - need rigid model for ice climbing courses. eg Vasque Super Alpinista

Socks - 2 pairs of warm loop lined ones.

Gaiters - made from breathable material. eg Rab Latok Gaiter

Wicking thermal top - not cotton please!

2 Warm fleece jackets - or equivalent. eg Rab Baltoro Lite, Ogre Jkt, Phantom Jkt

Thermal leggings - or warm mountain trousers.

Thin Inner Gloves

Warm Ski Type Gloves - eg Rab Latok Glove, Ice Gauntlet, Mountain Gauntlet

Hat or Balaclava - must fit under a helmet.

Spare Mittens - especially if you suffer from cold hands. eg Rab Mountain Mitt

Spare Fleece - eg Rab Generator Smock, Photon Hoodie

Water Container - approx 1l, or .75l flask.

Headtorch + batteries eg Petzl Myo XP

Map, Compass + Whistle

Personal medications + blister kit

Ski Goggles + sun glasses if you're feeling lucky...

Harness, eg DMM Renegade + locking karabiner and belay device

Long sling + locking karabiner

Climbing Helmet 

Crampons - with antiball plates. eg DMM Gladiator, Aiguille or Terminator (for technical ice)

Ice Axe - classic type for intro mountaineering. eg DMM Raptor or Cirque

Ice hammer - for ice and mixed courses. eg DMM Fly, Venom or Rebel

Your guide will have all other climbing safety kit, first aid and survival equipment plus the ropes (though you may be asked to carry one!)

Above all, alpine kit needs to do the job but be as light as possible.  Fabrics such as e-vent and paclite are ideal for alpine waterproofs, which are carried as often as worn.

Waterproof Jacket - lightweight breathable model preferred. eg Rab Latok Alpine

Overtrousers - with long side zips. eg Rab Latok Alpine Pants

Rucsac 35 - 45l is sufficient.

Rigid Mountaineering Boots see guidance notes. eg Vasque Super Alpinista

Socks Warm loop lined pair + spares.

Gaiters made from breathable material. eg Rab Latok Gaiter

Wicking thermal top long sleeved and light colour is ideal!

Fleece mid layer or equivalent. eg Rab Baltoro Lite

Mountain Trousers or thermal leggings

Thin Inner Gloves

Warm Ski Type Gloves

Warm Hat  must fit under a helmet.

Spare Fleece eg Rab Generator Smock, Photon Hoodie

Water Container at least 1litre.

Headtorch + batteries eg Petzl Myo XP

Map, Compass + Whistle

Personal medications + blister kit - bring lots of zinc oxide tape.

Sun Glasses (CE rated 3 or 4).

Sun + lip cream (factor 15+).

Sun Hat

Rock Boots must be able to wear all day.

Approach shoes or trainers.

Harness Eg DMM Renegade + locking karabiner and belay device

2 prussik loops + karabiner if in doubt, bring 2.5m of 6mm climbing cord!

Climbing Helmet

Pair of Technical Ice Tools eg DMM Rebels

Rigid Mountain Boots - must be warm, thinsulate lined models - eg Vasque Super Alpinista

2nd Pair Goretex Gloves - or equivalent, one pair will often get wet.

Light Duvet or Belay Jacket - eg Rab Quantum, Belay Jkt or Photon Hoodie

NB Crampons with vertically orientated front points can also help a lot! Eg DMM Terminators
