Alpine FAQs

1. When is the season for alpine climbing?

The main alpine climbing season runs from mid June to mid September, with July and August being the busiest time. When to time your visit depends on what kind of climbing you want to do:

Ice and mixed routes tend to be in better condition at the start or end of the season, rock routes and rock ridges are more likely to be clear of snow after mid July and glacier crossings get progressively more crevassed as the season unfolds.

For very experienced climbers, we also run winter alpinism and couloir climbing courses during March and April.

2. How much experience do I need?

You can start alpine mountaineering with no previous snow or ice experience - but for our more advanced itineraries, previous experience is required. For more information take a look at our alpine course suitability section and the individual course descriptions. Also, whatever you do, don't underestimate the fitness requirements.

3. Do I have to use your recommended hotel?

No - you can stay wherever your budget or inclination decide! We specifically don't include food and accommodation in our itineraries to give you this flexibility. Our recommended hotel in the Chamonix valley, the Hotel Les Lanchers offers a convenient, comfortable and good value option based on our experience in the region. When visiting areas away from Chamonix or staying in mountain huts, the guide will book each hut in advance and you simply pay for them as we go along.

4. What do you do if mountain conditions prevent a particular ascent taking place?

If weather or conditions prevent a specific peak from being attempted, we will always offer you the best possible alternative. Week in week out however, it's rare that we lose a scheduled climbing day - as we always have different options planned and a vehicle on hand to travel elsewhere if neccesary. We have access to a lot of information about climbing conditions and weather forecasts throughout the Alps, so it doesn't usually take us long to find a nearby alternative venue where conditions are more favourable. If we are concerned about conditions in the run up to a trip, we will contact you and rearrange plans accordingly, taking into consideration your current travel arrangements so as to minimise disruption.

5. What Equipment do I need?

To download a full summer alpine climbing kit list - click here. You are responsible for bringing all items on the kit list. For specialist items including ice axe, crampons, harness, helmet, boots - local hire is available if needed.

6. Do I need insurance?

Specialist rescue insurance for alpine mountaineering, covering helicopter evacuation, medical treatment and repatriation is required for all of our alpine courses. Standard travel insurance packages generally exclude such activities, so you will need to take out a specialist mountaineering policy. For more information on reccommended insurance providers, visit our insurance page.

7. Do I need to bring a car?

The guide will have a vehicle and fuel budget on all scheduled courses. For private guiding, the guide will have a vehicle available but you are expected to cover any fuel + travel costs incurred.

8. What qualifications and experience do your guides have?

Our team are all fully internationally qualified IFMGA guides, with a huge experience of mountaineering in the Alps both summer and winter and further afield. Many have made major 1st ascents of alpine style climbs on expeditions around the globe.

9. Can I book a personalised version of course '.......' with a private guide?

This kind of tailored guiding represents over half of our work - so no problem at all. Just send us some info about your mountaineering background and experience, what you would like to do and your prefered dates - then we can discuss options and ideas.
